Frequently Asked Questions

When is the Singapore corporate tax return due?

Singapore corporate tax returns (Form C-S, Form C-S Lite, or Form C) are due to IRAS by 30 November every year, regardless of your company’s Financial Year End. Form C-S is for companies with revenue at or below SGD 5 million earning only standard-rate income. Form C-S Lite simplifies filing for companies with revenue at or below SGD 200,000. All other companies file Form C.

How long do I need to keep my Singapore company's accounting records?

The statutory minimum is 5 years. This applies under the Companies Act (section 199(2A)), the Income Tax Act (section 67), and the GST Act (section 46). Each runs from the end of the relevant financial year, year of assessment, or accounting period. Sector-specific rules in finance, healthcare, and gaming can be longer. For most Singapore SMEs, 5 years is the rule.

Does my dormant Singapore company need to file accounts?

Yes. Dormant Singapore companies must still file an Annual Return with ACRA and a corporate tax return with IRAS each year. The filings are simpler but they are not optional. SBC’s Dormant Accounting package is SGD 660 per year and covers the financial statements, tax computation, and filings a dormant company needs to remain in good standing.

Will I get a tax bill if my Singapore company makes a loss?

You will not pay corporate income tax in a loss year, but you still need to file the corporate tax return. Losses can be carried forward indefinitely to offset future profits, subject to the shareholding continuity test. New companies also qualify for the Start-Up Tax Exemption for the first 3 Years of Assessment, which can substantially reduce tax when the company turns profitable.

What is XBRL and does my company need to file it?

XBRL (eXtensible Business Reporting Language) is the digital format ACRA requires for financial statements lodged with the Annual Return. Most Singapore-incorporated companies must file in either Full XBRL or Simplified XBRL. Dormant Singapore-incorporated companies and small exempt private companies have limited exemptions. SBC’s accounting packages include XBRL preparation alongside the financial statements.

What accounting standards does my Singapore company report under?

Singapore companies prepare financial statements under Singapore Financial Reporting Standards (SFRS). Qualifying small entities can elect to apply SFRS for Small Entities, a simplified framework. Both produce a Balance Sheet, Statement of Comprehensive Income, Statement of Changes in Equity, Cash Flow Statement, accompanying notes, and a Directors’ Statement. Companies above the audit-exemption thresholds also need an auditor’s report.
